Old Cars for Fine Art Photos
9 May
About a week ago, I had the opportunity to take another fun workshop from my friend master photographer Jeff Johnson. Our group headed to the middle of nowhere in Colorado Springs to a fantastic salvage yard with acres and acres of wonderful rusty old cars. I like these excursions to photograph something different because they force me out of my comfort zone. I started off a little slow because I couldn’t decide what lens I should use. After changing lenses three times, while everyone else was off and running, I decided I should experiment with my wide angle.
I bought my wide angle lens a couple years ago and have rarely used it. After using it for this workshop, I realize its a lens that requires a little practice to really appreciate it capabilities. Dan Greenberg who was Jeff’s assistant for the day shared some of his expertise on how to photograph cars to create interesting angles and eliminate the clutter of the other nearby cars.
Toward the end of the day, I tried out my new close-up lens for a few shots. This was my compromise purchase instead of investing in a 100mm macro. The Canon 500D Close-Up lens looks more like a heavy duty filter that you screw onto the front of a lens. Here I was using my 70-200mm Canon lens with the 500D Close-Up Lens attached. I was amazed at how it shortened the focusing distance. I’m very happy with my purchase.
